Title: Board Game Calendar Weekly Challenges
Post by: Dragon on June 10, 2020, 21:00:34
My wife bought a calendar for me from BoardGameTables.com (http://BoardGameTables.com), which is a pretty cool weekly calendar with a challenge listed for each week.

Week 2 - Play a game without talking.
Week 3 - Play a game with someone new.
Week 4 - Play one more game after you think it's time to go to bed.
Week 5 - Play an old game with a new strategy.
Week 6 - Play a game halfway through, then switch sides.
Week 7 - Play a game that has no luck.
Week 8 - Play a game with your neighbors.
Week 9 - Play a dexterity game with your non-dominant hand.
Week 10 - Play a card game.
Week 11 - Play the game you have owned the longest.
Week 12 - Play a game counter-clockwise instead of clockwise.
Week 13 - Play a game that you think you will lose.
Week 14 - Play a game with a lot of dice.
Week 15 - Play the game you own with the longest name.
Week 16 - Play a game in the Top Ten on BoardGameGeek. (https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame)
Week 17 - Play a game without reading or knowing the rules.
Week 18 - Play a game three times: back to back to back.
Week 19 - Play a cooperative game. [✓] We played Hanabi.
Week 20 - Play the game you own with the shortest name. [✓] We played QE.

Week 22 - Play a game you bought at a thrift store. [✓] We played Othello.
Week 23 - Play a game that takes four hours or longer.
Week 24 - Play a game with at least eight players.

Are you able to complete the weekly challenge?

Who's up for the next weekly challenge? Did anyone complete last week's?

Week 25 - Play a game that you think you will win.

Personally, I have a lot of games in my collection that I could play to complete that challenge, but I'll list a few that wouldn't work for me - meaning, I think there is a better chance of me losing than winning. A few that come to mind are Acquire, which we played just last night and I had the worst score, Agricola, which we played for a few weekends in a row and I only won once, and Boggle, which I probably spend as much time looking up words during scoring to verify whether they are actually words as I do writing them down.

Week 37 - Play a board game on a phone or tablet.

(I play Conquest Online, here at dragonshobbies.com, and games on BoardGameArena quite a bit and haven't ever counted any of them for these challenges, so I think in this case, I'll personally only check off this challenge if I play it in real-time or using Hot Seat mode with one of my kids. I do have one board game that I only own in digital format - Dungeon Heroes. That one is best in Hot Seat mode anyway.)

Week 39 - Play a game that was published with the last year. [✓] We played Farting Cows And The End Of The World.

Week 40 - Play a game outside.

I may or may not actually complete this challenge, but I think I'm going to at least post up a couple games I have that might fit the challenge. For this week's challenge, obviously games that don't have a bunch of pieces or cards to fly away are going to be the best options. My suggestions: Cathedral, Quarto, or Rumis

Week 41 - Play a game completely backwards.

??? I'm really curious about what people would do for that challenge. I guess maybe a game like Sorry, where you're trying to get all your pieces from one place to another might work. Would Chinese Checkers backwards be any different than Chinese Checkers forward? (Is that game still called that?)

Week 42 - Play a two player game.

Sorry about forgetting to post here about the Weekly challenges. I?ll take a moment to catch up here.

Week 43 - Play a game via email.

Week 44 - Play a zombie game.

Week 45 - Play a game on your lunch break.

Week 46 - Play a print-and-play game.

Week 47 - Play a game that was designed over 100 years ago.

Week 48 - Play a game that isn?t published in your native language.

Although I did play at least one game most of those weeks, I didn?t complete any of the challenges... probably because I wasn?t really thinking about them when I had a chance to play something. Also, I have still been playing asynchronous-turn-based games on www.boardgamearena.com, which is kind of like playing via email but a lot less work involved since all the visuals and rules are managed there, like a video game.

For this week?s challenge, maybe I can get my son and wife to play Union Pacific with me. It?s an American railroad themed game, but I believe it was only published in German. (I got an English translation of the rules on a separate piece of paper.)

We finished out this year playing Caylus 1303 on New Years Eve. Fun game. I won by a single point over Isaac and nearly double Beth's score.

I counted all the times that I've played games with someone over the past year. These were face-to-face table top games, or on rare occasions, BoardGameArena hot-seat mode. I played 66 different games this year; 30 of them were played 2 or more times, with Caylus 1303 being the last one to make that cut for 2020.

The 12 most played games for us (me with my immediate family for the most part) for 2020 were:

First, played 8 times:
Farting Cows And The End Of The World

Second, played 7 times:
Dinosaur Tea Party

Then, with 6 plays each:
Silver & Gold
Splendor
Agricola

Followed by these, with 5 plays each:
Redemption
Coloretto

And finally, with these rounding out the Top 12, with 4 plays each:
Logger
Castles Of Mad King Ludwig
Hero Quest
Stone Age

In the back of the calendar there was a section for a 10x10 Game Challenge, which I hadn't heard of before, but simply is a matter of picking 10 games that you'll try to play 10 times throughout the year. I mentioned it to my wife and she said that Caylus 1303 should be one that we put on that list for 2021.

Title: Re: Board Game Calendar Weekly Challenges
Post by: Dragon on January 02, 2022, 21:38:53
I guess I'll just catch up by listing the rest for the year. Most of these weekly challenges didn't get completed. I still enjoyed the calendar and having the challenges to encourage playing some games that I hadn't in a while. I was considering buying a new calendar from www.boardgametables.com for 2022, but unfortunately it looks like they haven't made one for this year. I've decided that I'm just going to use the weekly challenges from the last 2 years and I'll randomly pick out a weekly challenge from those. So... here's the rest of the list.

Week 34 - Play an unused game that's sitting on the shelf of shame.
Week 35 - Play a game whose cover art catches your attention.
Week 36 - Play a game with custom dice.
Week 37 - Play a game involving direct combat and let the other players win. (Or not)

... The "Or not" was actually written in the calendar challenge by the publisher... but seriously, why would I just let the other player win??? If it was like Suicide Chess where the winner is the first person to lose their King... that would be an acceptable challenge. ... Ok. Moving along.

Week 38 - Play a dexterity game and close your eyes during your turn.
Week 39 - Play a game designed by someone with the same nationality as yours.
Week 40 - Play a team-based game.
Week 41 - Play the most complex game you own.
Week 42 - Play a game whose title is hard to pronounce.
Week 43 - Play a new game you love. [✓] We played Rival Troops.
Week 44 - Play a game in which players take simultaneous turns.
Week 45 - Play a game set in a country you have visited.
Week 46 - Play a game that comes in a white box.
Week 47 - Play a storytelling game.
Week 48 - Play a game whose components may be the subject of a bedtime story [✓] We played 12 Days.
Week 49 - Play a crowdfunded game.
Week 50 - Play a game that uses its box as part of the game. [✓] We played Dice Forge.
Week 51 - Play a science fiction game. [✓] We played The Captain Is Dead.
Week 52 - Play a game with the best first player token.
Week 53 - Play a game based on a book or a movie. [✓] We played The Princess Bride.

Of course, Week 53 is the week that is partially in 2021 and partially 2022, so this might also be Week 1 for 2022.

Using the previously listed weekly challenges, each week I'll randomly select one.

This week: Play a two player game.

We completed the previous week's challenged:

Play a two player game. [✓] We played The Settlers Of Catan Card Game.

Now, our challenge for the upcoming week:

Play a game half-way through, then switch sides.

I can't even think of a good game for this challenge, since it would have to be one that is very clearly played over a specific amount of rounds in order to accurately know the half-way point. Suggestions are welcome.

We completed the previous week's challenged:

Play a game half-way through, then switch sides. [✓]We played Labyrinth.

It was a 4-player game, and we rotated around the table once the first player got their 3rd treasure card.

Now, our challenge for this week. (Sorry, I forgot to do this on Monday):

Play a game whose game board would be fantastic as wall art.
