Man I am so glad u guys posted these! Brings back so many memories. The Bandit was my "Red Ryder BB gun" I was obsessed with getting it. I'd sit and watch X-mas shows with my folks while having the Pennys and sears catalogs open to the pages they were on. Like being 11 all over again :) All these years later & still getting RC stuff for X-mas. Got a Monster XX & a Grave Robber body for my Nitro Stampede!

Oh hell yeah, i used to love seeing these old sears magazines from the early 90's every christmas. Actually I think it was the only thing sears had that I had any interest in lol.

I even remember every sunday before christmas i would tear into the news paper and find all the adds to stores like toys r us and kmart when they would advertise these.

The bandit was my all time unicorn of r/c cars. My older brothers friends who lived behind me got them for christmas one year and i wanted one sooooooo bad and never could find one. They moved off several years after and i didnt talk to them for a long time. Then 14 years after that christmas I got both of their bandits from them and will never sell them for any amount of money

Its great to see that other people have an appreciation for these cars that were such a big part of my childhood. I can remember all these cars back in the early 90's and how much of a hit they were. I love sharing pictures and stories of these things from what I remember

I even remember back in the day it was about 1993 I was just a little kid and went to one of my sisters softball games and I was playing around and stumbled upon a wing for a yellow wild thing hopper. I guess some kid broke his off. At the time I didnt know what it really was, all I knew was that it was made by tyco and so I took it home and kept it. Later I found it was the wild thing hopper wing and was gonna try to buy one some day but the wing got lost. Now I have a yellow and black wild thing hopper and the yellow one was missing the wing when I got it, kinda makes me wonder.........

haha! that is great! hmm 1993, yeah i was 1 not going to remember much, i remember the rebound in the maximum heat series, but that was 1998 when i can really remember them, and then they just started getting really junky. can you believe my mom bought my super fast traxx in 1994 to give to me when i got older?! she even got it on clearance
Title: Re: Dealers catalog from 1980's- 1990's-photos
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on January 08, 2011, 02:28:00
Yeah 98 was the last year of any real tyco before mattel started to take over. Really 96 was the last of the year of the cool tyco cars before they ruined all the coolness about them.

Thats an awesome story, talk about lucky. I got my first super fast traxx because my friends across the street who's parents bought them everything got them one for no reason. They played with it a couple times then put it in the closet. I used to bring a charged 7.2v over every time to play with it lol. About 6 years ago I went over there and was talking about it to my friend and he just gave it to me. I played with it till I broke the reverse on one side and someone bought it from me for $100. I still regret selling it

haha, well, i have an extra and a partial one!

but yeah i hate how my mom buys junk and keeps it forever, but it was worth it cause she got this. did you know they made a orange and green stickered version of it? when they got it there was one pink and one orange, and my dad insisted on the orange cause it was manly, but my mom got the pink one cause she liked it, and cause the box was damaged on the orange and green one. i've never seen one. but my dad recalls it clearly.

he remembers it well cause he thought spending 50 dollars on a toy was outrageous
Title: Re: Dealers catalog from 1980's- 1990's-photos
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on January 08, 2011, 02:41:59
Hmmm, I might be interested in one of them

Dude she made an awesome find and at an awesome price. I remember going to toys r us and seeing the fast traxx in the big glass case with the Nikko Thor, Trailblazer, Tacoma, Iron eagle and a few more cars. They first had the Super Fast Traxx listed for $199!!!

Yeah I remember there being more than one color of the fast traxx and I belive they made a handful of them in the colors they did in the regular version, but the black and pink is the most common. I know over seas they made them in different colors than the ones here.

If you dad knew what he was buying at the time im sure he would have bought everyone they had. Parents just dont understand till they see what these things are actually worth.
Title: Re: Dealers catalog from 1980's- 1990's-photos
Post by: czstycor/c on January 08, 2011, 02:52:11
well, the super fast traxx i got is from 1992, they got it at a boscovs clearance tent sale. i've never seen the super fast traxx in any other color. just think how much the orange and green would be worth!

i know that they made the regular fast traxx in the super fast traxx stickering across seas, but with pink rims, and it was taiyo stickered. pendemic was trying to buy it but he couldn't get the language figured out. i would have payed good money for that, it would have looked amazing next to my sf traxx.

i will say if i'm ever in texas again i will make a point to come see your shop and collection and the catologs haha. by any chance are you near the GAIN headquarters? they are a charity that send food and clothing across seas. i'm not sure where they are.

The green and orange super fast traxx looked just like the half traxx in green and orange, to give you an idea. Ive seen one go on ebay but I cant remember how much it went for its been so long since.

I couldnt find them online so im really not too sure. If you have a city or more specific name I might be able to look. If your ever in the area your more than welcome to stop by, I have a Toyota 4Runner shop and usually working on an rc car if im not busy. I keep the collection at the house on a display wall and stacked high in a closet

i'll ask my sisters work at the PA brach but are going down there to, get more training. and Gain is the name.

my dad told me it was orange, with the green lining. but there is another rare one, a half traxx i don't know of anyone else that has one besides me. and line is older than 92. it was before the frequency stickers were black with the three little colored boxes.

so you run a toyota shop but your truck looks like a ford, and you had a ferrari in the shop? haha no toyotas in sight

yep, i remember around christmas of 90, i had just turn 10 and i got a nikko black thunder, not to be confused with the other nikko black thunder hilux truck like the thor but the black ford truck body with the switch that started it up and made engine sounds it did run off 7.2 volts but it was not real fast on take off, at the time i thought it was fast, then after christmas break i think every kid in class got a bandit and belive me, you talk about getting kicked to the curb for having anything other than the bandit, however i thought obviously they were just not wise to how much cooler my nikko was to there bandits, until one day the bandit commercial came on which was the first time i seen a bandit, talk about staring defeat in the face!!!

i broke the black thunder a few weeks later and accorse went to trade in for a new one and got back to the toy section of walmart to find one and found a whole shelf full of a red and black bandits but at a hefty 20 bucks more my folks told me get bent and get what ya had...the bandit eluded me for nearly 20 more years, i did however get the pleasure of having some of the other tycos that came out in the 90s but, the 90s was the best years for tycos, with the mutator being the begining of the end as far as im concerned, had that one too when new

Yeah they made the half traxx from 90-92. 91 was when they changed to the color coded stickers to identify them and all the cars had the ability to steer without having to use forward or reverse.

Yeah I have had anything but a Toyota since I opened the shop and thats what everyone tells me. The truck in my picture is actually a 1991 GMC Syclone, very rare it was a turbo charged and AWD truck that if you remember was faster than the ferrari 348 and testarossa and the corvette ZR-1 back in the day. This one is number #1219 of 3000 made.

The Ferrari in the picture is actually one that I built 2 years ago when I worked for a ferrari restoration/tuning shop. That is the fastest ferrari in the world by record, set the record at 296mph AA/BMS class car. It was just featured on top gears website where it ran 275mph this last year, same car I have the picture of the bandit on. It was a originally a 308 GTB converted to a 288 GTO replica

about the time of the re release of the rebound late 90s or 2000 ish tyco made a r/c called the assasin, that was the latest cool r/c they made, it was a late model camaro body on a off road chassis with the same tires and wheels as the rebound only the assasins wheels were chrome plated, it was 9.6v and only had 1 gear but it was comparable in speed to the older tycos and would wheelie from take off

I was just about to say, the mutator was the very last of the generation. In christmas of 96 I got a black new bright 9.6v f150 with the high and low gears, at the time it was $100 and I just loved the way it looked, well i took it out to this ravine at a church that had about 1 foot deep of water. The truck floated across and amazingly drove out of the ravine. I thought it was soooo cool i kept doing it over and over. Well I got back home and it stopped working so I took it back to toys r us and they ran out of them so the only thing cool I could find in my price range was a purple mutator. I had seen the commercials so I was kind of pumped about it. I still have it today

CZ: that blue f150 you have was at toys r us in 96 the same time my black one and mutator were.

ahh, okay it was hard to tell what kind of truck it was from how small the picture is. i will have to go look at the top gear web site.

hopefully my electrical engineering degree can be tied in with automotive things, i originally wanted to go into restoration but its not an opening feild

i like the chevy luv truck haha. but with an open bed. but my dream car would be a chevy camaro z28 70-73 green with white or black racing stripes, or a custom purple blue tone.

i've never seen an assasin but what about the fugitive? it has the mutator body but its a monster truck. there was a late 80's model body camaro monster truck kinda thing on ebay but it was a radioshack or new bright

I remember in summer of 2000 I bought a red super rebound and it just stopped working so i took it back and bought a green one. I still have it int the garage.

I also remember the assasin, they made that then also a hummer with orange tiger stripe paint scheme and another truck with the mutator body called the fugitive

yeah that f150 is actually my brothers...another toy my mom kept to give, to son that wasn't even born yet! but it is fast for a new bright, it can contend with the mutator

i got my mutator a few years ago at an auction, i thought it looked sweet so my mom bid on it since i was in school, and i got it and then it just sat in a toy box until this past year.

yes the fugative, there was one on ebay a few months back but i forgot to bid on it.

yeah, i don't really like pontiacs, but i do like some. i would love to help some one rebuild a car, or help iin a shop to get an idea and know my way around cars.

all i can do is rotate tires, change brakes and rotors, change the oil, and put in after market radios( but that is rough), oh and wash em

Yeah auto restoration is down, i left the shop in feb of 2009 because the economy took it way down then I started the toyota shop. At the same time I had a 96 Viper GTS blue with white stripes and sold it to start up the shop

Ive had 3 syclones, a ton of corvettes and other cars but as of now im just down to the Syclone and a 69 corvette 427 t-top 4 speed #'s matching car

New bright started making the 2wd platform in 96. Before that they made the 4wd platform from 93-95 with a jeep or syclone body. I have the 4wd one in a green jeep body. Its the only one I have ever seen anywhere period

i'm excited to see all these cars that i missed out on, you better got the pictures up this weekend haha.

so did you specialize in toyota vehicles at one point? and that is why your shop is toyota. if not why not just call it the kings shop? haha

Im definitely gonna post the collection this weekend.

I never specialized in toyotas before I opened the shop just knew them well. I did however build the fastest MR2 before tho haha. Its called the 4runner house because I sell parts and repair for toyota 4runner and pickup trucks only. For a while I was tempted to turn it into a half rc shop too, this I could call it king rc haha

Yeah thats the one, I believe thats the picture from top gear.

I have only owned collectable american cars but have a soft spot for ferraris and lamborghinis, none of which I will probably ever own. That ferrari actually has a big block chevy motor with twin 98mm turbos, some people whined about it not having a ferrari motor but hey, its the fastest one in the world so it has all right. I still have the bonneville tires from it in my shed

Has anyone come across a Tyco Recoil 4x4 truck?? Im having a hard time finding anything about this truck, looks pretty sweet, but I need more info. Not sure how old it is and I need a remote (27mhz) Truck has 4 fixed position wheels (front dont turn side to side), more like the Mutators tires. It uses 6.0v turbo jet pack.  Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

i remember having a hot wheels poster with all the ones from that year and me thinking I MUST HAVE THEM ALLLLLLLL!!!

I did the same thing with a Micro Machines poster I had :D

I promised myself if I ever have enough money to build my dream garage (of real cars) one of them would be a custom built black Nissan "Outlaw" hardbody pickup with a working supercharged V8 in the bed, RWD, with all the logos, custom chrome wheels/bumper, lights, silver tinted windows and everything else.  I don't think getting it to wheelie would be a realistic goal (lol) but everything else would be spot on.  Then one of you guys would have to make a Bandit version and we could meet up he he.

Ah it's fun to dream  8)

Thanks a heap for uploading these, guys.  I already posted it in mayfew's list thread, but I have been putting together a spreadsheet that's attempting to organize all the info I can find, and these posts were invaluable.  If you want to check out what I've been working on, I threw the XLSX file up on a wordpress site:

http://nixzero.wordpress.com/tyco-rc-vehicle-list/ (http://nixzero.wordpress.com/tyco-rc-vehicle-list/)

I would appreciate any info to help fill in the gaps.  Currently, this info is scattered across dealer catalogs, press releases, manuals...  I'm just trying to get it all in one place, any input is welcome.

Hey guys!  I recently bought a Tyco R/C catalog from the U.K.!  This isn't one of the massive catalogs, more like a booklet, and it ONLY covers the R/Cs.  At first I was a lil disappointed in the lack of info, until I found the fold out chart in the back!  This is my first upload attempt, I hope it works!  If you have trouble with them, or if you can't read the chart, I also posted it on the aforementioned wordpress page.

That's also perfect for what I had always intended on putting onto the Wiki here. Nixzero, if you actually transcribe that into a spreadsheet format, please send that to me. I'd love to put an HTML version up on the site to make it more legible and easily searchable.

By the way, I did install a Wiki application to use on this site quite a while ago, but I never finished the configuration. Again, I apologize for taking so long (over a year) to actually complete that portion of the project. I have felt stretched so thin regarding my personal time over the past year and I feel like my web projects have taken a major brunt of the repercussions.

The catalogs bring back some serious memories. I wish I still had my red and white 4wd baja truck I saw in an earlier post. That thing would tear through grass with no problem, something many newer rc vehicles have trouble doing.

I wish someone like HPI or Tamiya made a modern one with proportional steering and speed control.

No problem, I think its important to preserve these pictures on the internet before they disappear forever and this site is the best place for them. I personally think the Taiyo/Tyco Range from 1986 to around 1993 is best range of Toy Grade RC's ever made and I don't think we will ever see anything again that rival's their unique designs and quality.

Yeah good effort Hopper, with these pictures.

I'm trying to do much the same, one car at a time at least, with the articles on my blog. Those Tyco catalogues are hard to find, and a few months ago I lost a bidding war with another collector to get hold of a few of them. And I was trying to pay $80 per catalogue too - but alas I only got some of them.

I would tend to agree that the 1986-1993 period for Taiyo was a golden era for the brand. Although a few of their most loved models, such as the Taiyo Big Roader (better known as the Radio Shack 4x4 Off Roader) were released a little earlier, like 1985.

One thing that Taiyo never really had (unless I am mistaken) though is Digital Proportional models. I can't think of any at the moment - which is pretty amazing. Do you know of any?

There are some other Japanese companies that during the 1980s, and particularly the the early to mid 1980s, released some unbelievable R/C toys that are both beautiful scale models and exciting in terms of their functionality. Obviously there's Nikko. But how many of you are familiar with the 1/10 scale Gama Land Rover, manufactured by Matsushiro? This model even came complete with a motorized inflatable boat that you would attach to it's roof.

(https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frcmemories.files.wordpress.com%2F2014%2F08%2Fforsalegamalandrover2.jpg%3Fw%3D1000%26amp%3Bh%3D&hash=ab417f380cce14f564096b84adef72594bafca51)

Taiyo's era was more about robust, cool and fun looking vehicles, and less about scale models. But I think in terms of quality, there were models from Shinsei, Nikko, Yonezawa, Matsushiro and others that were the equal of Taiyo.

cheers!
H.

It that you Rob?

Its Nostalgia RC aka Hopper4WD, or Hopper on here ... 'I know too many names' lol.

I definitely think Nikko from the 1980s and early 1990s were equal in quality if not greater but alot of their RCs were more like entry level hobby grade than Toy Grade. I don't know of any Digital Proportional models from Taiyo. I think if they were to make them, it would have increased costs and that would have been added on us the customer. (Not like they were cheap already) I think they just wanted to make a high quality product that anybody could enjoy. Also I love the box art from Taiyo and diversity of designs.

Jet Hopper, Twin Turbo Lambo, Turbo Bandit, Typhoon Hovercraft, Fast Traxx

Are these are the most iconic Taiyo RC's?, with honorable mentions to the Jet Fighter+Aero, Jet Racer 4WD / Max Hopper, Mini Hopper, Super Fight F1 and my new favourite the Outlaw Sprinter which I have just acquired and its a beauty!

nice to have great chats again!

cheers

It that you Rob?

Yes it is :) And I know it's you too Hopper. I can pretty much tell anyone with "Hopper" in the name, with a great collection of Taiyos, has to be you!

I definitely think Nikko from the 1980s and early 1990s were equal in quality if not greater but alot of their RCs were more like entry level hobby grade than Toy Grade.

I know what you mean, and I guess I believe that many (perhaps most) of the R/C toys made in the 1980s would qualify to be called "entry level hobby grade", because of the quality of materials they used.

Just compare any Taiyo, Nikko, Shinsei etc model from the 80s, with the toy grade stuff made today (e.g. the crap from brands like EZTec), and the 80s cars are closer to Tamiya in terms of rubber and plastics quality.

I think the ones you listed are some of the most iconic.
I think that the early buggies that came out after the Jet Hopper, such as all the others in the Hopper series, and the Fighter series, are very iconic and much sought after.

Then after that there are certain "hit" models, like the Fast Traxx (and the series of related models), Typhoon, and even the Rebound, which was very popular.

Outlaw Sprinter is very nice. I think at the moment my favourite Taiyos are the Jet Fighter and Jet Racer, I'm  a bit obsessed with them.

cheers,
H.

I also had a Aero Mini Hopper III and Lamborghini Countach LP500S 4aa version which were in the loft for 15 years, the mini hopper did not survive but the lambo did amazingly even with no box and no battery lid.

(I really want a twin turbo Lambo in Taiyo Branding) I guess it's my hoil grail of Taiyo RC.

Anyway, I have only been collecting for about a year! and discovered all these amazing RCs for the first time. Before you know it I have 20 of them! I feel like I have become some what of an expert in them as far as their history and understanding their value as collectors pieces.

I also really like the Jet Fighter and Jet Racer 4WD but I have only ever seen them in pictures. One day I aim to have them too. Although I kind of already have the Jet Racer 4WD as I am pretty sure it has the exact same chassis and components as the Max Hopper 4WD with a different body.

Included a pic of my Outlaw Sprinter, it looks like new!

Cheers
Hopper

Yeah it does, it looks great.
There's a NIB one on eBay I believe, at the expected price.

Speaking of the Lambo in Taiyo branding, what are your thoughts on the branding? I started a new topic about it:
http://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/index.php?topic=17355.0

Impressive work for 1 year of collecting Hopper, as some of these models are quite hard to find.
Obviously with the website, I do buy a lot, some of which I also sell. I've bought about 60-70 cars in 2014, but also sold quite a few. You can't keep everything, and after 20 years of collecting, I do need to prioritize a bit.

You know, I actually own that rare Jet Racer with the yellow tyres you sent me a while ago. It was from a Taiyo Toy Fair in the 1980s. I've kind of got it saved away for Christmas and haven't looked at it yet. It's NIB, so I wonder how many other NIB limited edition Jet Racers exist in the world? :)

The other challenge is that I collect Tamiya, Kyosho and many many more etc as well as the ready-to-run models, so the finances need to be shared between many, many different makes. But when you do it for a while, you eventually end up with some nice pieces in each brand :)

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Glad there still are people out there who appreciate these amazing RCs from a time long forgot.

In response Dragon yes I have run it once, I made a video, here's the link. I also have all my other Taiyo's on my channel.

As far as collecting other brands I never really got into the hobby grade side of RC. I admire the vintage Tamiya and Kyosho models but the Toy Grade RC's is all I really know so I will probably stick with them. I have a Nikko Turbo Bandit which I really like, I may get a few more Nikko's in the future but at the moment I am concentrating on Taiyo.

Cheers

It's interesting to hear of someone who only collects Taiyo.

For me, there's just so much amazing variety and so many interesting models across all the brands from the 80s. It was an era of creativity and experimentation, mixed with realism. They were the golden years of RC and there will never be another era like it.

I definitely agree about the variety across all the brands from the 80s but for me Taiyo is what I have the best memories of. Also collecting everything can be very expensive, collecting Vintage Taiyo's alone is not cheap especially when you add up everything you have spent. I would rather have one amazing collection that I really enjoy than bits and pieces of others that I don't. I guess it depends on how old you are, and how much you are prepared to invest in the hobby.

Memories definitely play a big part on what you like to collect. I'm the same of course.

I think as the years have passed though, I've discovered a lot of models that "had I known about them at the time" (when I was a kid) I would have loved them and wanted them just as much, as the ones I do remember.

Combine that with the fact that I did at least "know of" quite a lot of cars in the 80s (even if I never owned most of them), and you end up with... a pretty varied collection comprising a lot of cars, across a variety of brands.

Despite all of that, the stuff I collect is still very much about what I enjoy and appreciate. I don't hoard, or just collect for the sake completing a series etc (and there are some people out there who do that). You've got to focus on what you enjoy and what gives you the most happiness.

100% agree, I remember when I first starting collecting and discovered all the amazing RC's from Taiyo. In a way I was shocked that there was such a variety of designs.

As a kid the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari F40 were my, (and still are my) favorite cars and discovering the twin turbo Lambo with a speed of 31 km/h !!! was an awesome feeling. Even by today's standards that is pretty fast. I knew I had to have one and that is what keeps me going in the hobby of collecting.

Guys I'm not sure how this forum died out soo much but I think we need to get it back up and going again. I wanna start posting projects and info a lot more to see if we can keep all this going. I'm about to start speed testing about 50-60 nikko Tyco radio shack and new bright cars from the 80's-90's and also test them on 11.1v lipos using a GPS :)

TBK, I have no idea why this forum died off either...I've been posting things here occasionally, and felt almost like I was the only one around.
By all means, post as often as you can. Your plan to speed test all those cars certainly sounds interesting!

Yeah just gotta wait on the GPS to get here next week. I actually ran about 9 cars last night on 11.1v lipo Nikko's/Tyco's and they all hauled ass. I'm gonna test them stock and on 11.1v. I was running a bandit on 11.1v and it would pull wheelies from a rolling start haha

When I was about 14 or 15 years old I had a Tyco rc car. It was made in the mid 90s. I know everyone had one.lol Well this one was special, and I have not been able to find it anywhere. There are no pics online, I can't even remember what it was called. Bear with me while I try and explain what it looked like. First off it was very long and the color was red. It had 2 very skinny front wheels with suspension, and had a Huge single track/trax, on the rear. It looked somewhat like a snowmobile but wasn't one! Im sure it was made by Tyco. If anyone knows what it was called or have a picture they want to share it would be amazing! Thanks

I am a big Tyco Turbo train collector and does anybody know what Tyco Catalog This Chessie Turbo train set was in? I think it was a 1990 Tyco dealer catalog. Can anybody provide me with a high quality scan if they find one? You can send an image to my email at grjd01@windstream.net.

Hi onebadbug, I have some catalogs from that time, but they are currently packed up. I'll try to get to them next month so I can look through them for those images.
